The Full Story

Hey, I'm Michelle and welcome to Mumstoppable Fitness as I believe us ladies are unstoppable when we put our minds to it! I am a fully qualified personal trainer, fitness and group instructor and pre-and post-natal exercise instructor, 43 years young and a busy Mum of three kids, 11, 8 and 3, so I only know too well how difficult it can be at times to carve out some time for yourself but it is possible and that's where I can help!

I am on a mission to help ladies out there who are finding it difficult to kickstart their fitness journey, those who are struggling with yo-yo dieting, those who have started a fitness plan for a couple of months, reached a goal and then reverted back to old ways…honestly, I have been there and I know only too well how frustrating it is!

After working in the corporate world in various marketing and business related roles for over 20 years I decided to take a career break after having my third child and that is when I took the opportunity to study the area of fitness more and qualify as a PT.  My passion for movement and fitness has grown massively over the years and after dipping in and out of multiple types of workouts and programs and gyms I believe I have found the combination of what works best for me being a busy Mum and most importantly how it is sustainable. I wasn't athletic when I was younger and always found the gym intimidating so it wasn't until I was in my 30's that I became interested in fitness. I can honestly say I’m in the best shape of my life now in my 40’s and I firmly believe that this can be the case for anyone…no matter what age you are.

I had my first child when I was 32 and at that time my Mum was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I was tired and irritable, needed a distraction and wanted to lose some weight so I signed up for my first 8 week online program. I’ll never forget that first 20min jog I had to do as part of the workout but I stuck with it and over a few weeks I started to feel good about myself, it was a different focus and in turn I not only noticed the physical changes but also how my energy levels increased massively aswell which was the main driving factor for continuing with it and my passion has only become stronger over the years. I even ran the Dublin Marathon in 2022… a goal I am extremely proud of and something I would never have  thought I would be capable of completing back when I started out doing online workouts when I was 32.

I always exercised  throughout my pregnancies as I was fit and it was safe to do so as I had no complications. I had one natural birth and two c sections (one emergency and one planned) so I have experienced three completely different birthing experiences and recovery. I completed programmes specifically tailored for postnatal women after my pregnancies to slowly build up my core before returning to regular exercise. I can’t stress enough that this takes time especially after a c-section so please ensure you do not rush back into regular exercise or else you’ll set yourself back. I also advise going to a specialist Women’s Health Physiotherapist for a Postnatal assessment as they have specialised training in this area.  I’m incredibly diligent about exercising the right way! Technique and correct form are absolutely vital to prevent any injuries long-term!

It’s never too late to start exercising and discovering what type of exercise you really enjoy and what works for you, once you get into a routine it will honestly help your body and mind in so many ways especially as you get older! I thrived in group exercise environments as I always enjoyed the social aspect plus home online fitness programs worked massively for me as they are flexible and I was able to do a workout, whether live or recorded, when it suited. That alongside with being accountable each week proved to be most effective. I think this is key….being accountable is so important as plans can just fall to the side if this element is not in place. While I have worked out in gym environments and thoroughly enjoy it now, especially resistance training I always return to home workouts as they are just so convenient.

In 2021, I even did 12 weeks prep online for a fitness photoshoot as part of a client competition with Believe2Achieve gym when the gyms were closed during COVID, doing tailored home workouts from my fantastic PT at the time using dumbbells and a kettlebell I had at home, that mixed with specific tailored nutritional advice, cardio and some sea dipping helped me get photoshoot ready! No Gym was needed! Was the process tough? Yes! Was it worth it? Absolutely! Am I that lean now? No, I'm not, it's a process that I was delighted to undertake and may do so again in the future but maintenance of that level is just not sustainable for me.  In saying that, I'm really satisfied that I've found a balance of lifestyle choices that have worked and helped me be in the condition I am today.

I set up Mumstoppable Fitness as I am on a mission to help other ladies out there carve out a small bit of time for themselves, to fall in love with exercise in whatever form that may be and make it a normal/fun part of the week without dreading it.
